ith the New Year return-traffic surge expected from Jan. 2 to 4, authorities are stepping up road safety operations to prevent accidents that have already claimed a number of lives during the year-end holiday season.
“Today, we convened all traffic chiefs, both in person and online, to align our approach to anticipatory traffic management, particularly regarding restrictions on three-axle trucks,” said Brig. Gen. Faizal, head of the National Police Traffic Unit’s Law Enforcement Directorate, added that regional units must also anticipate crowds in tourist areas.
Although fireworks have been canceled during the upcoming New Year’s celebration to show empathy for residents affected by floods and landslides in parts of the country, traffic to popular destinations is still expected to be heavy, requiring careful management.
Fatal accidents have occurred across multiple regions leading up to and following Christmas, as heavy rains lowered visibility and made road conditions more hazardous, while holiday traffic increased.
Among recent incidents was a crash in Wonosobo, Central Java, on Saturday morning, when a container truck carrying 38 tons of ceramic tiles lost control at the Kertek intersection due to brake failure and rammed several motorcycles. Five people were injured, including a 13-year-old. Police said wet road conditions likely contributed to the accident.

The accident occurred at kilometer markers 259-260 in Kampung Pajak village when a motorcycle tried to overtake a truck into the oncoming lane.
