escuers have found debris and one body from a chartered small airplane that lost contact mid-flight with 10 people on board in South Sulawesi, as search teams continued efforts to locate remaining passengers and crew amid adverse weather conditions.
The ATR 42-500 turboprop airplane, operated by charter airline PT Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact with air traffic control on Saturday afternoon during a flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar, South Sulawesi. The airplane was chartered by the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry to conduct air surveillance on fisheries.
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said search and rescue teams located on Sunday morning the wreckage of the plane around the summit of Mount Bulusaraung, which borders Maros and neighboring Pangkep regency. The discovery followed a coordinated air and ground operation involving Basarnas, the Air Force and local search teams.
“At around 8:02 a.m. local time, a joint search team, which used the Air Force’s Caracal helicopter, located debris believed to be parts of the fuselage, tail section and windows,” Basarnas Makassar office head Muhammad Arif Anwar told a press conference on Sunday morning.
Evacuation efforts on Sunday morning were hampered by strong winds, according to Basarnas. It hindered the search team deployed by air from landing. The Air Force had deployed personnel from the Rapid Force Corps (Kopasgat) and ground troops to assist Basarnas with the evacuation.
On Sunday afternoon, the body of one victim had been found among the debris of the plane in a ravine some 200 meters deep at the fog-covered Mount Bulusaraung, according to Arif of Basarnas.
He did not reveal the identity of the victim, while the status of the other nine people on board is not yet known.
