P

olice thwarted the trade of protected rare primates in Riau when two residents from Kampar regency and Pekanbaru city were arrested in two separate cases.

A suspect identified as DE, a resident of Salo village, Salo district, Kampar regency, was arrested when offering an owa ungko or agile gibbon (Hylobates agilis) at Rp 8 million (US$476.94) on Bangkinang ring road on Jan. 25 morning.

Kampar Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Boby Putra Ramadhan S said the case started from reports by the public who suspected illegal animal trade activities. Detectives from Kampar Police then conducted investigation leading to the arrest of the suspect while he was waiting for customers.

“During the arrest, officers found an agile gibbon which was hidden inside a cardboard box. The suspect could not show any documents on the animal’s ownership,” he said on Jan. 29.

When found, the rare primate’s condition was bad, indicating that it did not get proper treatment from the suspect.

Thea agile gibbon is a protected animal, as regulated by Environment and Forestry Ministerial Decree No. P106/2018 on Types of Protected Plants and Animals,” Boby said.
