court on the resort island of Bali has sentenced three Australians to between 12 and 16 years in prison for a shooting last year that killed one compatriot and wounded another.
The Denpasar District Court on Monday found Mevlut Coskun, 22, Paea-I-Middlemore Tupou, 26 and Darcy Francesco Jenson, 27, guilty of premeditated murder and illegal possession of firearms.
Coskun and Tupou were each sentenced to 16 years in prison for carrying out the shooting, while Jenson received a 12-year sentence for aiding and abetting the crime.
The sentences were lighter than those sought by prosecutors, who demanded 18 years in prison for Coskun and Tupou and 17 years for Jenson.
Presiding judge Wayan Suarta said the panel considered several aggravating factors, including that the killing was carried out after “long, thorough and systematic planning.”
“The crime caused deep trauma to the victim’s family, while the defendants showed little remorse and failed to apologize to the relatives,” Wayan said.
However, the court said the defendants’ young age and their cooperative behavior during the trial were considered mitigating factors in determining the sentences.
