resident Prabowo Subianto performed Idul Fitri prayers at the Darussalam Mosque in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh, on Saturday morning, joining hundreds of residents still recovering from last year’s deadly floods that devastated the region.
The President arrived at the mosque at around 7:20 a.m., wearing a white long-sleeved koko shirt (male Muslim attire worn on special occasions) and a black traditional peci cap, according to a livestream by the Presidential Secretariat.
He had travelled to Aceh early in the morning by helicopter after spending the eve of Idul Fitri, also known as malam takbiran, in the North Sumatra provincial capital of Medan, where he had arrived the day before from Jakarta.
The visit comes months after parts of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra were devastated by deadly flash floods and landslides in late November 2025, triggered by extreme weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Senyar, a rare storm that had formed in the Malacca Strait a few days earlier.
The cyclone-induced floods and landslides have destroyed homes, roads, and other infrastructure, displacing more than 4,700 residents and claiming at least 1,200 lives, with Aceh, the country’s westernmost province, being the worst-hit region, according to the latest data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Critics have decried the way his administration handled disaster relief, including Prabowo’s resistance to declaring a national disaster and allowing international aid into affected areas, fueling frustration among survivors and local administrations who had desperately pleaded for swifter action for relief efforts.
Upon entering the mosque, Prabowo took a seat in the front row, joined by other officials, including Aceh Governor Muzakir “Mualem” Manaf, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Home Minister Tito Karnavian.
