he University of Indonesia (UI) has suspended 15 law students following the completion of its investigation over their sexually explicit group chat that sparked public outrage in April, with the light punishments raising questions of whether the school administration adequately ensured accountability and victim protection.
The punishment was handed down after the university’s anti-sexual violence task force completed its investigation into the students after screenshots of group chat between 16 law school students containing vulgar remarks and objectification of female students and lecturers went viral on social media in April.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the university said the 15 of 16 reported students were found to be violating university regulations. Meanwhile, another student was found not guilty after the task force reviewed the available evidence.
Three of the 15 students were suspended for three semesters, while seven others were banned from participating in academic activities for two semesters. The remaining four were also suspended for one semester.
One student received light administrative punishment of a written warning as well as an obligation to sign a statement apologizing to the victims as well as a commitment not to repeat similar conduct in the future.
