hree Kalimantan orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) individuals were released into their natural habitat at Gunung Batu Mesangat protected forest in Busang district, East Kutai regency, East Kalimantan, on June 23.
The three were previously kept as pets and are identified as Bagus, Eboni and Ruby.
Bagus was rescued by East Kalimantan Natural Resources Agency (BKSDA) in early September 2020 in Merabu village, Berau regency. Eboni was evacuated in late April 2022 from Long Beliu, also in Berau.
Meanwhile, Ruby was evacuated from Sekurau Atas village in East Kutai regency in early April 2024.
East Kalimantan BKSDA head M. Ari Wibawanto said the release of the three orangutan was the manifestation of Forestry Ministry’s commitment to Kalimantan orangutan conservation efforts.
“The activity was a collaboration between East Kalimantan BKSDA, Human Resources Training and Development Agency [BP2SDM] Region V Samarinda, East Kalimantan Forestry Agency, Kelinjau Production Forest Management Unit [KPHP], Center for Orangutan Protection [COP] and local communities,” he said.
“Before they were being released to the wild, the three orangutans underwent rehabilitation program at Borneo Orangutan Rescue Alliance [BORA].”
