rosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) demanded an 8.5-year prison sentence for suspended Riau governor Abdul Wahid, as well as a fine of Rp 500 million (US$27,664) and the payment of restitution amounting to Rp 1.45 billion during a trial at Pekanbaru District Court on Thursday.
Wahid is a defendant in a case relating to alleged corruption and extortion at Riau Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing, Settlement and Land (PUPR-PKPP) Agency with two other defendants, agency head M Arif Setiawan and gubernatorial expert staff, Dani M Nursalam.
The prosecutors presented 506 pieces of evidence, including three bundles of documents containing proposals for official posting formations in the Riau provincial administration in a trial led by presiding Judge Delta Tantama.
Head of the KPK prosecuting team, Meyer Volmar Simanjuntak, said that facts revealed during the trial showed that Wahid had been legally and convincingly proven to have contravened articles 12 and 18 of Law No. 31/1999 on corruption eradication, as well as the 2023 Criminal Code, in accordance with the first indictment.
“We request the panel of judges to sentence the defendant to 8.5 years’ imprisonment, minus time served during detention,” Meyer said while reading the sentence demands.
In its consideration, KPK prosecutors said there was no mitigating factor other than his never having been previously punished by a court. Wahid’s behavior during the trial was an incriminating factor.
“The defendant was dishonest and convoluted while giving testimony, making it difficult to prove,” Meyer said.
