orestry law enforcement authorities in East Nusa Tenggara have named a suspect involved in the illegal hunting of the Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) at Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) after being on the run for 9 months.
Investigators at the Jawa, Bali, Nusa Tenggara Forestry Law Enforcement Agency, Ambrosius Dalija, said the suspect, identified only as INS, was accused of illegally hunting the deer with firearms, as quoted by Kompas.com on Monday.
The male, who had been a fugitive for six months, is currently detained at West Manggarai Police’s detention center in Labuan Bajo.
Ambrosius said that INS is also accused of carrying three firearms when a joint team conducted enforcement operations at Komodo National Park in December.
When chased by officers, INS resisted arrest and fired his gun toward the officers’ ship, before escaping by swimming in the sea with several other illegal hunters.
“He is one of the firearms owners. He also shot at the officers’ speedboat,” Ambrosius said.
“INS and his gang have been hunting deer for years. They acquired the firearms from another one of the perpetrators.”
