he Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) celebrated its 55th anniversary on Tuesday, pledging to continue to push into increasingly complex policy debates even as the space for expert voices in policymaking appears to be narrowing.
CSIS executive director Yose Rizal Damuri highlighted the think tank’s strategic role in shaping public discourse and policymaking for over five decades, with its contribution having been grounded in empirical research and analysis of the challenges facing the country.
The think tank, he said, would remain consistent in its mission while expanding both its capacity and areas of focus to address the increasingly complex challenges, including geopolitical competition, climate change and rapid technological development.
“We cannot close our eyes to the fact that the situation is becoming increasingly complex and requires more comprehensive analysis and perspectives,” he told The Jakarta Post, stressing the growing need for policymakers to have access to diverse perspectives and comprehensive analysis.
He acknowledged that the current domestic environment for policy debate may be becoming more challenging, but stressed that this would not stop the CSIS from continuing its work.
“Although it may be increasingly difficult for us to offer our views, we will continue doing what we have always tried to do,” Yose added.
