T

he second season of Wayward Pines has recently come to an end, and no official announcement has been made regarding plans for a third season. But here's several good reasons why this mystery, science-fiction television show is good binge-watching material for your spare time.

The man behind the show

If you don't know already, Wayward Pines is M. Night Shyamalan’s (director of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) first project as executive producer in the medium of television. It is an adaptation from Blake Crouch’s trilogy of novels.

Compelling story

In the first season, main character Ethan Burke (played by Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon), is a secret service agent that finds himself in the idyllic, peaceful scene of Wayward Pines. Though it is seemingly too “nice” for a town, he begins to chase leads and trails to discover the secrets the town is holding.

It continues on to Ethan becoming sheriff of the town, ultimately joining the forces that brought people to this town in the first place, but also trying to keep the peace in the almost-too-peaceful town, that is surrounded by an electric fence. It is a thrilling experience to binge-watch because each episode reveals more secrets, generates new questions and all the while helps viewers understand the town a little bit better.

Ethan discovers not only why the residents of Wayward Pines cannot leave, but also that everyone in town woke up from a time of suspension; a period of two thousand years have passed since the 21st century. The residents who are still in the dark about this information have unanswered questions, such as, "Who really pulls the strings in this town?" and "Why are we here?"

Creative plot

The second season starts with new main character Dr. Theodore Yedlin (Jason Patric), who follows Ethan Burke’s lead, having just woken up from suspension and is very suspicious of the town. He, once again, is brought behind the scenes unveiling the secrets the town is holding, and the secrets the town is preventing from getting in. The skeptical and a little bit cynical Dr. Yedlin eventually comes to terms with what is going on, but develops a conflict with the current leader of the town on how to govern over it. This time the battle isn’t surviving each other; it’s surviving what’s to come.

Viewers have no idea what’s going to happen next, and it is the unpredictability that keeps viewers on their toes. The creative plot that serves as a screen to cover up the bigger plot really piques viewers’ curiosity. And every episode is simultaneously creepy, terrifying and mysterious. (kha/kes)
