gus Lahinta, the creative director and founder of Rumah Karawo, showcased karawo, Gorontalo’s traditional embroidery motif, at the 2017 Couture Fashion Week New York on Sunday.

On his Instagram account, Agus recorded the fashion show while presenting his karawo collection.

Amin YRA . . . #karawomendunia #KarawoGoesToNewYork #rumahkarawo #newyorkfashionweek2017 #newyork #indonesia #fashion

He writes that he felt moved upon seeing the traditional motif appear on world stage.

According to kompas.com, karawo means “hand-embroidery”.

Also known as kerawang, it takes around a month to finish a 20x20 centimeter piece of fabric because the embroidery technique requires precision.

The traditional technique has been passed down from generation to generation.

Founded in 2005 by fashion designer Andres Aquino, Couture Fashion Week is a multi-day event that presents a series of couture and luxury fashion shows in New York City, Cannes and other selected cities. (jes/kes)
