P

rince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle made their first appearance together following the announcement of their engagement by Clarence House, in the gardens of Kensington Palace.

Prince Harry was dressed in a dark blue suit while his fiancé wore a white coat reportedly from Canadian brand Line the Label. When asked how he proposed to Markle, he replied with a sheepish grin: “That will come later.”

Reporters also asked Markle to reveal her engagement ring, which was made by jewelers Cleave and Company. In the couple’s joint interview with the BBC’s Mishal Husain, it was revealed that Prince Harry designed the ring.

“The ring is yellow gold because that's her favorite, and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewelry collection to make sure that she's with us on this crazy journey together,” Prince Harry explained. Markle remarked that she found her ring to be “incredibly special.”

On the design of the ring, engagement ring specialist Ruth Donaldson commented: “It looks like two round diamonds with a cushion diamond at the center. The two outer stones are about half a carat and the center stone looks like it is around five carats. The setting is very simple and classic.

“The band is gold, which is good against Meghan's skin tone. The diamonds look as though they have been set in platinum, to keep the color nice and white.”

Donaldson estimated the cost of the ring to be GBP 150 to 400,000 (Rp 2.7 to 7.2 billion), but added that its value is likely to be much higher because it was designed by Prince Harry and contains diamonds belonging to his late mother Princess Diana.

In a statement released on Kensington Palace’s Twitter account, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said of the engagement: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”

Congratulatory messages and remarks have flooded social media platforms since news of the engagement broke, including from US former president Barack Obama and British actress/model Amy Jackson.
