scar-nominated directors Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston will both be credited as directors in Disney’s upcoming live-action film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Variety reports.

Although the two directors did not helm the film together, they will share a unique directing credit, as Hallström was the first director on the movie, while Johnston was hired for a month of reshoots.

Extensive special effects were required in the reshoots, for which Hallström was not available.

Usually, only one person can be credited with directing a film according to the rules of the Directors Guild of America. The rule, however, can be waived to allow two directors to be credited when the filmmakers have a history of working together, such as sibling pairs like Joel and Ethan Coen or Joe and Anthony Russo.

In this case, Hallström, known for his work on movies such as My Life as a Dog, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Dear John, offered to share the credit with Johnston, who accepted, and Disney agreed to list the two in a shared directing credit.

Johnston won the visual effects Oscar for Raiders of the Lost Ark and has worked on movies such as Honey, I Shrunk the KidsJumanji and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Disney’s The Nutcracker is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and stars Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Misty Copeland and Mackenzie Foy. The film is scheduled to be released in November. (sul/wng)
