United States singer Ariana Grande has been named Billboard’s Woman of the Year.
Billboard reported that she will be presented with the award on Dec. 6 at the 13th annual Women in Music dinner and awards gala in New York, the US. Previous awardees include Selena Gomez (2017), Madonna (2016) and Lady Gaga (2015).
Billboard vice president of content Roy Scarano described Grande as a star that never bent to a particular musical trend or path in the industry.
“She consistently stands up for herself and her decisions in a world that often isn’t hospitable to that sort of strength in young women,” he said.

Grande has topped the Billboard 200 albums chart three times, the latest one through her August release Sweetener. The album’s hit singles “No Tears Left to Cry” and “God is a Woman” peaked at number three and eight on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, respectively.
Grande is also active outside of her musical career. She participated in the March for Our Lives this year in support of smarter gun control and is an advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual (LGBT) rights, gender equality and mental health awareness.
In June 2017, she organized the One Love Manchester concert following the Manchester Arena bombing just outside her show in May, raising more than US$ 23 million for the victims and their families. (iru/wng)
