intang Ketjil (Little Star), an Indonesian children’s movie made in 1963, has been restored and was premiered on Tuesday, Dec. 18, by the Education and Culture Ministry’s Film Development Center (Pusbangfilm) in Jakarta.

Directed and written by Wim Umboh and Misbach Jusa Biran (both legendary figures in the Indonesian film industry), the movie tells the story of two children, Maria (Maria Umboh) and Suzy (Suzy Mambo), who decide to venture to the zoo on their own after their parents’ promises to take them were never fulfilled. In their adventures, they meet a shoeshiner boy and an eccentric former teacher who take them to places filled with music and excitement.

Band Koes Bersaudara was also featured in the movie, playing the titular song in their trademark style of harmonies. The band later on became Koes Plus, one of the most well-known acts in the country.

The restoration was done by Render Digital Indonesia, with the material being two copies of the film positive archived in the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) and Sinematek Indonesia.

Taufiq Marhaban of Render Digital Indonesia said they found the positives were well preserved, though with scratches.

Previously, Pusbangfilm had led the restoration projects for Darah dan Do’a (Blood and Prayer) and Pagar Kawat Berduri (Barbed Wire) in 2013 and 2017, respectively. Bintang Ketjil is planned to be screened publicly in big cities in Indonesia in the next year.
