Local teen film Dilan 1991 has reportedly garnered more than 2 million viewers in the first three days of its screening on Feb. 28, creating a new box office record in Indonesia.

On Friday, Dilan 1991 is said to have attracted around 800,000 moviegoers, 80,000 at the film’s gala premiere and 720,000 on its opening day.

According to online magazine Deadline Hollywood, the teen flick grossed US$2.05 million on its first day, breaking the record of  $1.79 million raked in by Avengers: Infinity War last year.

For the new box office record, Dilan 1991 also received awards from the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) for having the most viewers at its gala premiere and on its release date.

Responding to the achievement, production company Max Pictures, which jointly produced Dilan 1991 with Falcon Pictures, expressed its gratitude on Instagram, thanking those who supported the film.

Directed by Pidi Baiq and Fajar Bustomi, Dilan 1991 is the sequel to Dilan 1990, which was the country’s most popular film last year.

The film was adapted from Pidi’s novel, Dilan Bagian Kedua: Dia adalah Dilanku tahun 1991 (Dilan Part Two: He’s My Dilan in 1991), the second book in the series. The film follows the love story of high school students Dilan (Iqbaal Ramadhan) and Milea (Vanesha Prescilla). (jes/kes)
