An exhibition highlights the importance of creativity and plurality in understanding that culture is not mere entertainment but rather a powerful and transformative force.
n exhibition titled “Pluralism”, curated by Argentinian photographer Leandro Quintero and Indonesian art director Stacia Hadiutomo, aims to illustrate the common creative language used by Indonesian artists in their work.
The concept of the exhibition, held at the Soup N' Film venue in the Melawai area of South Jakarta until April 26, is to have photographers, stylists and artists collaborate to create compelling pieces and show how a variety of ideas permeates a specific frame of society – the creative industry.
To ensure the results present a colorful yet thematic palette, Quintero and Stacia approach the curation process in a variety of ways, that is by selecting archive works independently, by having the photographers present particular series of work and by assigning a mix of Indonesian photographers and stylists to produce entirely new images in pairs.
Some of the photographs are Quintero’s personal work. The result evokes an emotive reaction toward what Quintero calls “extremely dividing times” and how the younger generation has had enough of the negativity. By coming together, they become something stronger, something that can bring about actual change.
“The youth need to take control of their own future and their own policies to be free. They cannot obey and fear any longer -- they want to be who they really are, and they want to allow themselves multiple [options of what to] become,” he says.
Almost 30 creative minds take part in the event, including names known in the photography and style universe, such as Hilarius Jason, Alessia Gunawan, Karin Wijaya, Julian Latif and Natasha Tontey.
That common vocabulary reflects in the different creative processes, “weaving worlds together” according to the event's description.
