n its 30th anniversary, the iconic Yogyakarta Art Festival officially renamed itself Yogyakarta Culture Festival (FKY) in an effort to embody the cultural roots of the region beyond art.
Yogyakarta Cultural Agency head Aris Eko Nugroho said the name change marked a new chapter of the festival, which debuted in 1989.
“We want to expand the definition of culture beyond art,” Aris said in a statement.
He added that, in accordance with Regional Regulation No. 3/2017 on the preservation and development of culture, cultural objects included traditions, language, science and technology, and art.
This year’s FKY, which will run from July 4 to 21, was preceded by a series of festivities taking place around the region’s major shopping district on Jl. Malioboro last Saturday.
The pre-event festivities, collectively dubbed Mulanira Malyabhara, featured a host of music and dance performances from the likes of Kirab Drummer Guyub (KDGY) and the Jogja Fire Dance Foundation.
FKY 2019 general director Paksi Raras Alit said the pre-event performances were held on the famous Jl. Malioboro to attract more attention from the public, especially tourists.
