T

wo pictures placed in front of a white Volkswagen Type 1, popularly known as the Beetle, show a family posing with their car. One was taken in 1974 and another in 2014. In both photos, members of the same family are making identical poses with the same beloved car.

The car, called the “White Knight”, is one of the most popular attractions at the Jogja Volkswagen Festival 2019. It has belonged to the Djokosantoso Moeljono family since 1974 and has its own “birth certificate”, issued by the AutoMuseum Volkswagen in Germany.

“The car unites our family,” Yoyok Waluyo, the eldest son of Djokosantoso, told The Jakarta Post on Saturday. “It’s hard to put the feeling of driving this car into words, as it is full of memories of my childhood. It is not [merely] about the vehicle, it is [more] about the soul. The soul of Volkswagen is beyond anything.”

He added that whenever he drove the car, people would wave and admire the White Knight.

The festival, established in 2013, is being held at the Jogja Expo Center in Yogyakarta from Saturday to Sunday. This year’s festival, exhibiting 100 cars, is said to be the largest indoor Volkswagen exhibition in Southeast Asia, with visitors coming from Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States.

Wibisono, a Volkswagen enthusiast from Surabaya, East Java, acknowledged that his love for the German brand blossomed when he was a young man.
