C

anadian artist James Raiz is living his dream, doing what he loves while planning his next overseas holiday with his wife and three children.

Raiz is the creator and artist behind The Box Office Artist YouTube channel, which has over 1 million subscribers and more than 100 million views a day. He also has an extensive portfolio that includes the hand-drawn installation art for last year's Avengers: Infinity War, which was displayed at movie theaters across the United States and Europe, as well as in China.

With such accomplishments, one might imagine that Raiz has led an easy life. But Raiz has arrived at many crossroads in his 20-year-plus career, and has had to take a brave decision each time.

He was at the doors of a medical school when he realized that drawing was his true passion. His choice went against the wishes of his mother, who thought that Raiz would lead a life on the streets – like the portrait painter across the salon where she worked.

“So I made a deal with my mother: If I can’t get a job right after [graduating art school], I’d go back to med school,” said Raiz.

An avid cartoon fan who was introduced to comic books by a friend in high school, Raiz was into drawing sports cars. This was part of the reason that he was asked to join Dreamwave Productions during his final years in college.
