World-class violinist Iskandar Widjaja showed his personal side in the “1001 Lights” concert, the second edition of the Heritage Concert Series held at Soehanna Hall in SCBD, Central Jakarta.
collaboration between German violinist Iskandar Widjaja and Indonesian pianist Christine Utomo brought a calming yet exuberant vibe to Soehanna Hall in SCBD, Central Jakarta, over the weekend.
Performing several contemporary classical works by Turkish composer Fazil Say, the duo delivered note after note using unusual techniques to imitate the sound of Turkish musical instruments and created an atmosphere comparable to any version of the Arabian Nights tale.
Titled “1001 Lights”, the concert’s theme was brought to life through the stage décor, with small floor lanterns and light dancing around the concert hall — not a common sight in classical music concerts.
The second edition of the Heritage Concert Series presented by The Grand Signature Piano, the sole distributor of premium piano brands such as Fazioli, Bluthner, Estonia and Irmler, was meant to “test the waters”, according to Christine.
“We’d like to offer a different experience in enjoying classical music,” she told the media after the concert on Nov. 15. “It is the first time Iskandar [Widjaja] has played contemporary classical music in public, other than practicing at home.”
The concert was opened with a meditation ceremony in which pianist and JakArt Festival founder Ary Sutedja prepared the audience’s state of mind through breathing exercises before Iskandar and Christine warmed up the stage.
