Modest fashion is definitely on the rise in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population.
t’s not just a trend clamoring for longer hemlines and looser fits, the State of the Global Islamic Economy report says the global modest fashion market was worth US$283 billion in 2018, with Indonesia being the third-biggest contributor at $21 billion in expenditure. The report projects the global market will be worth $402 billion by 2024.
So it comes as no surprise when a growing domestic market aims to become the next mecca of modest fashion worldwide.
The Indonesian Fashion Chamber’s (IFC) annual event Muslim Fashion Festival (MUFFEST), entering its fifth year, is planning its expansion with this market growth in mind.
Scheduled to run from Feb. 20 to Feb. 23 at the Jakarta Convention Center, MUFFEST will move from last year’s Assembly Hall to occupy the Main Lobby, Plenary Hall and Cendrawasih Hall for 2020.
Apriani, general manager of event organizer Dyandra Promosindo, said that demand from exhibitors was the reason for occupying three halls this year. Around 200 exhibitors were present in MUFFEST 2019, with double the number expected to take part in this year’s event.
Along with business-to-consumer retail exhibitors, MUFFEST 2020 will also feature seminars and discussions. One particular discussion will be attended by American modest fashion influencer Summer Albarcha, who commands over half a million followers on Instagram.
Albarcha will also collaborate with local Muslim womenswear label Dauky, presenting the brand’s latest collection that takes inspiration from New York’s Manhattan and Brooklyn areas.
