13 Indonesian films coming to Netflix this month

The streaming platform announced on Twitter that the 2014 film Selamat Pagi, Malam (In the Absence of the Sun) will air starting on Thursday.

Thirteen Indonesian films will make their Netflix debut in April.

The streaming platform announced on Twitter that the 2014 film Selamat Pagi, Malam (In the Absence of the Sun) will air starting on Thursday.

Helmed by Lucky Kuswandi, Selamat Pagi, Malam follows the stories of three women in Jakarta and features Marissa Anita, Dayu Wijanto and Adinia Wirasti.

The film has received international recognition. It was selected to close the 2014 Singapore International Film Festival and was featured in the 2015 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

Meanwhile, 11 films by Falcon Pictures will also come to Netflix starting on April 23. They are Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind), Si Doel The Movie, Si Doel The Movie 2, Akhir Kisah Cinta Si Doel (The Ending of Doel’s Love Story), Dilan 1990, Dilan 1991, Milea: Suara Dari Dilan (Milea: Voice of Dilan), #TemanTapiMenikah (Friends But Married), #TemanTapiMenikah2 (Friends but Married 2), My Stupid Boss and My Stupid Boss 2.

Romantic comedy Dilan 1990 ranks second in the most recent list of Indonesia's of most-watched films. Adapted from Pidi Baiq’s popular novel Dilan: Dia adalah Dilanku tahun 1990 (Dilan: He’s My Dilan year 1990), the film attracted more than 6.3 million moviegoers in 2018.

Dilan 1990 narrates a love story between Bandung high school students Dilan (Iqbaal Ramadhan), the leader of a motorcycle gang, and Milea (Vanesha Prescilla), a new student from Jakarta.

“We’ve seen numerous high-quality Indonesian films with strong storytelling. They’re also loved by our viewers in Indonesia,” Raphael Phang, Netflix’s manager of content acquisition for Southeast Asia, said in a statement. “We collaborated with Falcon Pictures to introduce Indonesian films to our audiences worldwide and to support the country’s film industry.”

Another popular movie coming to Netflix is Joko Anwar's A Copy of My Mind (2015). Joko received the Best Director award for the movie at the 2015 Indonesian Movie Festival (FFI), along with Tara Basro as Best Leading Actress.

Four Lifelike Pictures films were made available on Netflix in late March, namely Pintu Terlarang (Forbidden Door) (2009), Modus Anomali (2012), Tabula Rasa (2014) and Banda: The Dark Forgotten Trail (2017). (wir/wng)
