The world has slowed down as a result of the pandemic, giving people plenty of time to spare. Physical exercise is a common hobby many have picked up during quarantine to pass the time.

Sales of sports equipment have seen a boost at online marketplaces. E-commerce giant Tokopedia, for example, has witnessed a significant increase in sports equipment sales amid the pandemic.

“Tokopedia's internal data shows that the number of transactions within the sports category increased three times in August 2020 compared to the pre-pandemic period,” Ekhel Chandra Wijaya, external communications senior lead of Tokopedia, said in a statement.

The top five types of equipment sold during the period are not only for quarantine-friendly activities, such as yoga, pilates and table tennis, but also outdoorsy activities such as cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding and golf.

According to the data, the number of bicycles sold during the pandemic has increased five times compared to normal. The most popular bicycle types among Tokopedia users are the folding bike, mountain bike and children’s bike.

The most dramatic spike in sales occurred when Indonesian brand Element Indonesia sold 200 bikes in 40 seconds during an exclusive launch on Tokopedia on Aug. 3. The sales broke the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) record for the most folding bikes sold in less than 1 minute.

Sports such as rollerblading and skateboarding have also affected sales on Tokopedia. According to the data, the sales in that category have increased four times.

Golf equipment saw an increase in sales by three times, while the table tennis category saw a sales increase of 2.5 times.

Quarantine-friendly indoor sports such as yoga and pilates saw a significant increase of 3.5 times during the period. (gis/wng)
