Out of 82,218 villages and subdistricts, 12,548 do not have access to 4G services, says ministry
he Communications and Information Ministry plans to extend the coverage of 4G cellular network services to every part of the archipelago by 2022, an official said on Monday.
Widodo Muktiyo of the Public Information and Communication Directorate General said faster internet was necessary to support the country’s digital acceleration.
"This year we saw an extraordinary [digital] acceleration, next year or even up to 2022 we predict the same thing to happen. So we aim that by 2022, all problems related to nationwide 4G coverage can be solved," Widodo said on Monday as reported by kompas.com.
He explained that out of 82,218 villages and subdistricts in the country, 12,548 did not have access to 4G services.
From the 12,548 villages and subdistricts, 9,113 are located in 3T regions (the frontier, outermost and remote regions).
"We'll carry out the project [of extending 4G coverage] in 2021 and 2022," Widodo said.
To support the efforts, he further stated that the ministry would continue to communicate intensively with House of Representatives Commission I overseeing defense, foreign affairs, communication, informatics and intelligence.
"We're intensively communicating with Commission I, especially on funding allocation for digital transformation infrastructure," he said. (nal)
