Helmed and penned by Edwin, Seperti Dendam, Rindu harus Dibayar Tuntas is adapted from award-winning author Eka Kurniawan’s third novel of the same name. It narrates the love story of Ajo, a fighter who keeps his sexual impotency a secret, and Iteung (Ladya Cheryl), a female bodyguard of the local mafia. The novel was published in Indonesia in 2014 by Gramedia and has been translated into six languages and distributed in nine countries, including China, the United Kingdom, France and Italy.

Set in the late 1980s to mid-1990s, the film explores masculinity and power relations that flourished in Indonesia at the time. Shooting took place in Rembang regency, Central Java.

The film’s scenario won the grand prize for Most Promising Project at the 2016 Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Project Market in South Korea. It also won Post-Production Award at the 2018 Hong Kong Asian Film Market (HAF) from Bangkok-based Whitelight Post.

Seperti Dendam, Rindu harus Dibayar Tuntas will be released in 2021.

Established in 2016, Palari Films was initiated by Meiske Taurisia and Muhammad Zaidy. The production house has so far released two feature films, namely Posesif (2017) and Aruna dan Lidahnya (2018). Both are available on streaming platforms Neftlix and Vidio.com. (wir/wng)
