Major versus indie, veteran versus newcomers, music versus pandemic; even the organizers predict this year’s AMI Awards the “most unpredictable ever”
he 24th edition of the Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Awards is accepting nominees from May 5 to July 10, with the ceremony set to take place in November.
With the abundance of records released over the past year and the music industry’s uncertain future due to the COVID-19 pandemic, awards organizer Anugerah Musik Indonesia Foundation is facing what is arguably their most challenging year yet. Lessons from last year’s ceremony, however, have given it more confidence to pull things off this year.
Musician Dwiki Dharmawan, who also chairs the AMI Foundation, told The Jakarta Post on June 7 that the game plan for this year’s AMI Awards was pretty much the same as last year’s.
“We will work with [national TV broadcaster] RCTI once again in organizing the 24th AMI Awards, which is expected to be the second to be held during this pandemic. We will establish the appropriate health protocols while ensuring the euphoria and the soul of AMI Awards are alive,” he said.
Dwiki elaborated that the awards ceremony would adopt the “hybrid event” method, combining both offline and online events. While the actual ceremony would “be physically attended by nominees and performers only, totaling less than 100 attendees'', RCTI would livestream the entire AMI Awards on its streaming platform RCTI+.
He also revealed that the ceremony would use just one venue, Studio RCTI+, as opposed to several different venues. “Considering the pandemic, we’re trying to minimize crowds,” he added.
Looking at the 2020 award ceremony, AMI Foundation general manager Shatria Darma said he believed that adopting last year’s game plan was the best strategy to maintain hype for the event.
