JAKARTA: The Attorney General's Office (AGO) says it has already sent a team to Guernsey, UK, to face Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra in a trial over the Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) Paribas case.
"We already sent prosecutors and three officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to face Tommy in the Guernsey Court. The first trial is scheduled for Dec. 15," assistant attorney general for state administrative affairs Edwin Pamimpin Situmorang said in Jakarta on Friday.
The case began when British authorities froze 36 million euros (US$48 million) from Tommy's bank accounts based on a request by the AGO, who claim the money had been obtained via corrupt means.
Tommy, the youngest son of the late former president Soeharto, later filed a plea against the court's decision.
Edwin said state prosecutors had prepared a strategy to face Tommy, but refused to go into detail. He only said that prosecutors had obtained new evidence that the frozen money did in fact belong to the government. -- JP
