ANDUNG, West Java: Two newly renovated classrooms at state elementary school SD Sejahtera IV on Jl. Sejahtera, Bandung, collapsed Monday, just a week after being renovated.
Dozens of third-grade students managed to escape unhurt after being ordered by their teachers to quickly evacuate the rooms when loud cracking sounds started coming from the roof.
"They collapsed about half an hour after all the students evacuated the classrooms," acting headmaster Supriyo told reporters.
He added his school had received a role-sharing budget of Rp 320 million from the 2009 provincial budget to renovate eight of its classrooms. He said construction workers were appointed to do the renovation.
"We asked them to check the condition of the building before renovating," he said.
Bandung Deputy Mayor Ayi Vivananda said his office would ask the police to investigate the accident to see whether there was a criminal element to it.
