JAKARTA: Swimming against the current of the trend of launching religious albums during the holy month of Ramadan, Bandung-based group Project Pop is choosing to stick with what they’re good at: amusing people with their humorous songs.
“Others can launch religious albums, but we’re different. I think there’s nothing wrong with that,” the group’s only female member Tika Panggabean said last week.
Since it first entered the local music scene in 1996 as a spin-off from Project-P, the comedic pop group has launched eight albums, all of which take on different issues but are consistent in their use of humorous lyrics and playful melodies.
“Batal Kawin” (A Cancelled Wedding), Project Pop’s first single from their most recent album You Got is one example of them being good at what they do. Inspired by a true story from a friend of one of the band members, the song can make people laugh even as it tells the sad story of someone being left at the altar.
According to group member Gumilar Nurochman, better known as Gugun, Indonesian listeners have lately been more receptive of black, satirical comedy.
“People can laugh at that and that’s healthy,” Gugun added. — JP
