AKARTA: The 29 Indonesian track-and-field athletes left for Laos on Thursday with the mission of repeating the seven-gold haul they achieved two years ago.
"With the track-and-field competition starting on Sunday, the athletes will have ample time to acclimatize to the local conditions in Laos," Tigor Tanjung, the general secretary of the Indonesian Athletics Federation (PASI), said as quoted by Antara before departure.
The competition runs until Dec. 17 with 45 gold medals up for grabs.
"Hopefully, Dedeh *Erawati*, Irene *T. Joseph*, Suryo Agung and Trianingsih can contribute gold medals from the track," he said, referring to some of the medal hopefuls.
Gold medals are also expected from Rose Inggriana (discus), Syahrial (long jump) and Ni Putu Desi (javelin).
Dedeh said she was eager to repay the federation's trust and confidence in her.
