our comments on the questioning of Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati by investigators of the Corruption Eradication Commission over the Bank Century debacle.

It is normal that the KPK questions Boediono and Sri Mulyani concerning the bail out of Bank Century.

As chairpeople and members of the KSSK, both officials declared that they took full responsibility of the policy to rescue the bank based on the facts, the economic condition and the systemic threat at that time.

Both decision makers are not criminal suspects  and are entitled to be treated respectfully.

Many members of parliament try to boost their image and show the authority of the Democratic Party by acting rude and being inconsiderate. To disgrace others, does not make one deserving of respect.

Boediono and Sri Mulyani were called by the KPK to give their testimony about the Century issue.

It was goodwill for them to be proactive, but it also made the public angry because the two did not want to come to KPK office. Instead, the KPK team had to come to their offices. It shows that they are different from other Indonesians.

The second is: When the witnesses will be examined, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was called. I think the President must let the KPK team do their job freely and transparently.

Your comments on the closure of the Parahyangan train due to a sharp decrease in passenger numbers following the opening of the Jakarta-Bandung toll road. The train served the Jakarta-Bandung route for nearly 40 years.

The decision by PT. KA to terminate the operation of the Parahyangan Train due to continuous financial losses is a rational act.

After the opening of the Jakarta-Bandung turnpike, it is impossible to compete against the services of minibuses, which can transfer passengers within two-and-a-half hours from house to house.

PT KA should now keep an optimum frequency of trips consisting of  executive and business class seats, and to uphold its social function, maintain only one or two trips exclusively for economic class passengers.

KA Parahyangan shouldn’t be stopped. PT KA should improve efficiency and clean up corruption.

Post World War II the Beeching Plan decimated an intricate railway network throughout the UK, based in short-term and short-sighted economics. It made the railways an “also ran” participant in the race for travel preferences.

While the Jakarta-Bandung route may not be on the same scale, it should be part of a National Transportation policy to sustain safe and reliable and environmentally friendly travel options for those who don’t have or don’t wish to use road transport.
