Letter: Indonesian palm oil plantation

I

ndonesia has 9.7 million hectares of palm oil plantation but the areas have been planted to cover 7.9 million hectares and its production target this year is estimated at 25 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO).

It represents as the leading producer of CPO in the world. This CPO production has exceeded Malaysia's. These sectors have created work opportunities for more than 30 million of people in the country.

Besides, we need to increase production and productivity annually, it is also important to raise its semi and final products that have higher added value for domestic and export purposes.

It is known that earlier Malaysia processed a big part of its CPO production to make the semi and final products for export so that its export value is higher.

The Indonesian CPO export has risen at 94.27 percent for latest six years from 8.66 million tons in the year 2004 to 16.83 million tons in the year 2009.

In an effort to develop CPO production and its industries, the government requires protecting the forested conservation and its environment so that the sustainable economic development can be maintained.

This is necessary to prevent the Western accusation to mark that the Indonesian government has neglected its obligation to pursue ecological behavior and an environmental system, while Malaysia has early implemented ecological practices compared to Indonesia.
