A

survey by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) shows public support for Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairmen Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah dropped after the Jakarta High Court overruled an order to halt an investigation into them on June 4.

The High Court declared the letter illegal after Anggodo Widjojo - a businessman who has been named a suspect by the KPK for attempting to bribe investigators to help his brother Anggoro Widjojo evade investigation by the KPK - filed a pretrial suit with the court.

The survey, conducted in May, shows that following the High Court overturning letter, only 20.3 percent of 1,000 respondents across the country objected to the idea of the court proceeding with the extortion case implicating the two KPK officials.

This represents a more than 30 percent drop from 53.4 percent in a previous survey in January, before the High Court declared the letter illegal.

The survey showed 16.7 percent of respondents, up from 11.5 percent in the previous survey, supported the trial. The remaining 63 percent, up from 35.1 percent in January, held no opinion or did not answer.

The number of those who did not believe that Bibit and Chandra did not accept bribe also declined from 56 percent in January to 33 percent in May (for Bibit) and from 55.7 percent to 33.7 percent (for Chandra).

This is a marked difference from last year when public support for Bibit and Chandra was high, leading to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's order to drop the case against the two officials.

A recent attempt to revive an online movement to support the KPK officials following the high court's ruling has received lukewarm response.

LSI research director Arman Salam, however, said that although the KPK faced many challenges, the public perception of the institute and its work was still positive.

"Some 65.8 percent of respondents said the commission worked well, with only 19.6 percent dissenting," he said.

He said the KPK's image was much better than the reputations of the courts and public prosecutors, with only 48 percent of respondents saying the courts were doing their work well and 42 percent of respondents saying the same for prosecutors.

Indonesia Corruption Watch coordinator Danang Widoyoko, said the KPK had a better record of achievements than police and prosecutors, so it deserved a better image.

He added that there was a public perception that if police or prosecutors handled a case, the process tended to be protracted and expensive. (rdf)
