AKARTA: The Jakarta Police confirmed Friday that long tubes resembling bombs, which were found at Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta recently, were firecrackers.

“The bomb squad has investigated the bombs and it has reported that they are fireworks,” spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said, adding that it was a form of terrorism as it caused people great concern.

He said that the police were still interrogating suspects including the owner of chicken cages, which were where the bombs were found, as well as people who witnessed the discovery.

Commenting on the discovery, a terrorism analyst Mardigu Wowieq Prasantyo said that it was “not a significant act of terror, the suspect only wants to shock people living in the area,” he said.

Mardigu said that there were many small extremists group growing (in the country), but the government was doing little about it.

However, intelligence expert Dynno Chressbon said that the government should become more aware of this kind of “deceptive” bomb case, adding that it was also a form of terrorism training.

“Firecrackers are materials that are usually used in training,” Dynno said.

“Judging from how the suspects assembled the firecrackers, they are similar to those used in riots in Maluku, North Maluku and Poso, Central Sulawesi.” — J
