AKARTA: The City Government expects that by the end of this month all residents in Jakarta will have received a single identification number, or “NIK”.
City Civil Registry Agency chief Franky Mangatas Panjaitan said the cards for the identification numbers were now being printed and would be mailed to all residents soon.
The numbers would be mailed to residents, including thousands for newborns, Franky said.
“Starting 2010, all newborns in Jakarta will already be recorded and will automatically have a single identification number, which will then be printed on the family card,” he said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The NIK program was part of the national drive to provide a single identity number for all citizens in the country, Franky said.
“We expect all citizens to have their single identification number by 2012,” he said.
Currently, only two million out of 8.6 million Jakarta residents have their own single identification number. — JP
