car belonging to the Russian embassy was involved in a traffic accident on the Grogol highway at the break of dawn on Monday, in which a toll road worker was injured.
The Russian embassy stated that the embassy’s car had not hit any Indonesian worker in the accident, but it did add that an Indonesian worker had been injured indirectly as a result of the crash as he jumped out of the way of the embassy’s car.
The Jakarta Police’s traffic directorate accident unit chief Comr. Miyanto said on Monday that “the car lost control and we have yet to identify the cause”. “We have summoned the driver, a Russian citizen, for questioning.”
The injured worker, Yuliandi, suffered injuries to his head, arms and left leg. He was being treated at Pertamina Hospital, according to the police.
Separately, Jakarta Police traffic directorate law enforcement sub-directorate chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sudarmanto said that the police were obliged to notify the Foreign Ministry about the accident through an official letter because the accident involved a diplomat of a foreign country.
“We want the ministry to facilitate our investigation,” Sudarmanto said.
Sudarmanto said that the embassy had confirmed that the driver was a diplomatic staff.
Separately, Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene told The Jakarta Post that his institution was working with the National Police on the case.
“The [investigation] process is currently underway and therefore I cannot make any further comment,” Michael said.
He also said the ministry had begun communicating with Russian embassy officials about the case.
A press release sent by the Russian embassy via email confirmed that one of the embassy’s cars had been involved in the accident at around 2 a.m. on Monday, but had not harmed anyone.
“A sports car made a sudden swerve toward the Russian embassy car. To prevent a crash, the Russian embassy car steered hard to the left and hit the road fence. The Russian embassy car then steered back to the highway road and hit a Toyota Avanza,” Russian embassy information and press bureau head Alexander Zimin said in the release.
“The Toyota hit the Russian embassy car on its rear. Fortunately, there were no casualties in this accident,” Alexander added.
The release also said that the embassy car driver and the Toyota Avanza driver had then made a deal to find a solution regarding the accident during a discussion on the side of the road. The discussion was supervised by the traffic police, it said.
“However, after a deal was reached between both parties, numerous workers from a company that is working on the highway suddenly showed up. They claimed that one of their colleagues was injured during the accident,” Alexander said.
“We then received information that there was indeed a worker nearby when the accident took place. [The worker] tried to avoid the colliding cars and as he jumped to the side way, he broke his leg. Therefore, the Russian embassy car did not injure any Indonesian citizen,” he added.
