AKARTA: The Jakarta Police called on prison officials had to improve monitoring to prevent drug trafficking activities from behind bars.

“If the monitoring is tightened, we can prevent the trafficking,” Jakarta Police anti-narcotics directorate chief Sr. Comr. Nugroho Aji was quoted as saying Friday by news portal tempointeraktif.com.

Nugroho added that 95 percent of drug trafficking from prison cells was facilitated through the use of cell phones as the main means of communication. “Without cell phones, drug trafficking from inside prisons would be significantly reduced,” he said.

He stressed that it was important for prison officials to ban cell phones for all inmates and to conduct regular searches for communication devices.
