AKARTA: Aisha Wardhana, the Indonesian doctor who had allegedly been kidnapped in conflict-laden Somalia, where she was working as a volunteer, is reported to be in Qatar.

“This morning we communicated with [Aisha] via Blackberry Messenger. She said she was in Qatar to treat the gunshot wound to her back, “ communications manager of Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT), Sugih Hartato, said as quoted by kompas.com.

“She said that she’s currently [in Qatar] with her sister,” he added.

The ACT team spent three days from Aug. 24 in Dadak district, near the Kenya-Somalia border, as humanitarian volunteers. On Aug. 30, the team entered Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, and remained there until Sept. 2.

Aisha Wardhana is a plastic surgeon listed as one of ACT’s volunteers. She was initially asked to join the ACT team under the leadership of Imam Akbari, and was due to depart with the team on Aug. 19. However, Aisha decided to delay her departure from Indonesia and join the team later, as she had to prepare for her upcoming wedding.

How Aisha managed to free herself from her kidnappers in Somalia and escape to Qatar is still unknown.

The Foreign Ministry is still trying to contact the parties involved that are handling this case, as well as verify Aisha’s whereabouts.
