Jakarta City Parks and Cemeteries Agency has announced plans to invest up to Rp 10 billion (US$1.1 million) for the renovation of sidewalks on Jl. Gajah Mada and Jl. Hayam Wuruk in Central Jakarta by 2012.

The sidewalks will be raised and fenced off so that vehicles cannot park on them.

“We wanted to make 5-meter-wide sidewalks like those on Jl. Sudirman, but there is not enough space,” agency chief Catharina Suryowati said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

That’s good news. Sidewalks in Jakarta are poor compared with other capital cities.

Don’t you notice motorcyclists race each other on the sidewalks of Jl. Sudirman during peak hours? Sometimes they ride on pedestrian bridges as well.

What a joke. It seems to me that the city administration keeps on building public infrastructure projects as they are already budgeted to do.

But the police are reluctant to enforce public order if it is not related to their duties. Hopefully my opinion is wrong.
