he number of foreign nationals working (55,000) or living (112,000) in Indonesia does not even represent one-one thousandth in the Indonesia’s overall population of 240 million (“Indonesia new honey pot for expatriates”, The Jakarta Post, Jan. 16).
This is in stark contrast to my home country (Luxembourg) with a population of 500,000 and over 200,000 resident foreign nationals. That is to say 40 percent of the population consists of resident foreign nationals.
In addition, over 150,000 daily commuters from France and Belgium cross the border to work in Luxembourg each day, meaning that during the day, Luxembourg citizens are a minority in their own country!
On the other hand, Luxembourg enjoys the highest income and standard of living within the European Union, which in the absence of a non-national workforce would have been impossible to achieve!
Communication problems with foreign nationals hardly exist, since everyone speaks native “Luxembourgish”.
