EMARANG: Godong regency residents in Central Java clashed with PSIS Semarang soccer club supporters after the supporters looted convenience stores and fruit stalls after a match against Persipur Grobogan Sunday afternoon.

Angry residents flanked PSIS supporters on their way home after the match, which ended in a 0-0 tie, to vent their anger over the looting. Clashes continued well into Monday morning, forcing local authorities to deploy hundreds of police officers and soldiers to protect the hooligans.

Two Mobile Brigade (Brimob) platoons from Pati and another two from Semarang were deployed while the Army sent the 410th Infantry Battalion from Blora and the Banteng Raider Battalion from Semarang.

Initial reports said that some PSIS supporters died in the clash but Grobogan Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Langgeng Purnomo denied those reports.
