massive fire has engulfed the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang, Banten, forcing dozens of nearby residents to evacuate and once again exposing the risks associated with Indonesia's continued reliance on open dumping.
According to local authorities, the blaze broke out on Tuesday afternoon and spread rapidly across the landfill, driven by strong winds.
Officials believe prolonged high temperatures ignited methane gas generated by years of decomposing waste. Methane, a highly flammable byproduct of organic decomposition, is commonly produced in landfills and can accumulate in large quantities if not properly managed.
Authorities have deployed 10 fire trucks and 45 firefighters to contain the blaze, but efforts have been complicated by the volume of burning waste and the landfill's terrain.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto said on Wednesday the blaze continued to burn despite round-the-clock firefighting efforts and warned that it could spread further.
"Firefighting efforts remain challenging because the burning waste is composed largely of highly combustible materials, including plastics,” Suharyanto said.
“In addition, many of the hot spots are located on elevated mounds of garbage, making them difficult for crews to access. The situation has been further complicated by strong winds and dry weather," he added.
