Bookworm: Arian '€˜Arian 13'€™ Arifin: Repeat reads

L

oud rocker Arian '€œArian 13'€ Arifin has enjoyed reading ever since he learned to read. He reads various types of books and reading materials, and loves rereading books.

'€œI read everything I can get my hands on. I used to carelessly read while lying down, which resulted in me having to wear glasses starting when I was in 2nd grade,'€ he said about his childhood.

Arian said that as a teenager, he read a lot of science fiction and books related to engineering.

'€œMy father was a rocket scientist; he bought me a lot of sci-fi books. Me and other kids during that time were also exposed to a lot of articles about weaponry and technology in kids and boys magazines,'€ he said.

The 38-year-old, who is better known by his underground scene moniker Arian 13, said that in addition to a vast variety of literature, he now also read books on music.

'€œAs a musician, I am influenced by many big musicians and bands. I love reading their stories and biographies; I like to learn about how they came to be musicians,'€ Arian said.

Arian is a legend in the Indonesian underground rock scene for being the front man of Puppen, the retired Bandung-based hardcore band, from 1992 to 2002. Following Puppen'€™s dissolution, Arian set up a new rock-metal unit called Seringai with Ricardo Siahaan, Eddy Khemod and Sammy Bramantyo.

One of Seringai'€™s highlights was when they opened for Metallica for the latter'€™s concert in Jakarta in
August last year.

Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window

by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi

I really like the alternative way of approaching early education as written in the children'€™s book by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi.

I like to imagine how awesome it would be for kindergarten and elementary school students to have the unconventional education that Kuroyanagi received at a Tokyo elementary school in the book.

Seribu Kunang2 di Manhattan
by Umar Kayam

The book, which is titled Fireflies in Manhattan in its international version, is a compilation of short stories written by Umar Kayam. This book was my first exposure to literature. When I read it as a kid I thought it was just another storybook. I have read it many times. It
reminds me of the years I spent in the US during my childhood. Umar Kayam was not very descriptive in the stories, but
I always get the feel of the stories.

Gerakan 30 September: Pelaku, Pahlawan & Petualang
by Julius Pour

I collect a lot of books about the 1965 event and conspiracy. I am obsessed with the major event because I am a member of the one of the generations that was brainwashed by (former president) Soeharto government'€™s propaganda.  I like the book Gerakan 30 September: Pelaku, Pahlawan & Petualang (The Sept. 30 Movement: Actors, Heroes and Adventurists) because it discusses all the important characters involved in the event, inviting readers to make their own analysis.
