he Public Works Ministry, the Jakarta administration and the Japanese government officially inaugurated the East Pluit pump station in North Jakarta on Thursday in a bid to better control floods in the capital.
The 1.6 billion Japanese yen (US$15.66 million) project, which covered an area of 34.2 square kilometers, will improve the flood management system of the Ciliwung river basin.
The pump has a capacity to accommodate 34 meters of cubic water per second. With this project, pump stations in the east, central and west areas of Jakarta will be able to hold 49 cubic meters of water per second.
"The east pump was damaged in 2009 due to land subsidence. This condition has pushed the central government and Jakarta government to reconstruct the station," Public Works Deputy Minister Hermanto Dardak said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
"Then the Japanese government offered assistance in its Grand Aid program to realize this project."
He said the project would prevent flooding in central parts of Jakarta, including the State Palace on Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara.(nfo)
