Members of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)-led coalition, which supports presidential candidate Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and his running mate, Jusuf Kalla, have reiterated their determination to secure millions of votes to help the pair win the presidential election.
Muhaimin Iskandar, chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB), one of the coalition members, said his party alone would secure 12 million votes for Jokowi-Kalla.
'Our beloved Ibu Mega [PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri], your lost son is ready to give his support. God willing, we will secure 12 million votes from our party strongholds to take Jokowi-JK [Jusuf Kalla] to victory,' he said in a speech during a NasDem Party national working meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Senior officials of coalition member parties, including NasDem chairman Surya Paloh, Hanura chairman Wiranto and Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) chairman Sutiyoso, attended the meeting.
Sutiyoso shared a similar determination, promising up to 4 million votes.
'My party will contribute not only 1 million votes as shown by quick counts but between 3 million and 4 million votes. It sounds small, but such small number of votes can determine victory,' he said.
Sutiyoso further said that the PKPI would work hard to win the election. 'I joined the coalition later because I had to first consider which party to partner with. I then decided to join this coalition ['¦] As I have determined to join this coalition, I promise you that all my party ranks are ready to work to help Jokowi and Kalla win,' said Sutiyoso. (ebf)
