Jokowi convinced ship-sinking policy disrupts no diplomatic ties

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo is convinced that his administration'€™spolicy to sink foreign ships caught committing illegal fishing withinIndonesian waters won'€™t disrupt the country'€™s diplomatic relationships with anycountries.

'€œThis is a matter of our country'€™s sovereignty. We deliver a simple yet brief message to anyone that Indonesia means business when it comes to tackling illegal fishing. We aren'€™t just staring and doing nothing while thieves are operating in our own backyard, are we?'€ he said on Saturday.

Besides, he went on, he has received no formal complaints from other countries over the sinking of ships.

He said the government had managed to arrest five big ships and 150 small foreign boats that were caught red-handedly committing illegal fishing within Indonesia waters.

'€œWe sank three of them on Friday. I hope the lesson will be learned and nobody messes with our fish anymore,'€ he said.

Jokowi and his entourage was in Gorontalo to meet representatives of Gorontalo fishermen communities and to also attend the national meeting of the Association of Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI).

Besides confirming his ship-sinking policy, Jokowi had also promised the fishermen that the government would build more facilities to assist fishermen on a daily basis, including new boats.(dic)
