AKARTA: Indonesia's men's doubles pair Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi sprang a surprise at the Singaporean Open badminton championship by defeating top seeds Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea 21-21-18 in a quarterfinal on Friday.
Rounding off the match in 47 minutes, Angga and Ricky admitted that they had not expected to win in two games.
'We played our game patiently. We stayed alert for short returns, placed the ball consistently before attacking once we got the chance,' Angga said as quoted in a media release from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan are also through to the semifinals after a 21-12, 21-16 win over fellow Indonesians Wahyu Nayaka/Ade Yusuf. They will tackle bitter rivals Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan of China in the next match.
In the men's singles, Simon Santoso overcame Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-10, 21-19 to book a place in the semifinals against Kento Momota of Japan.
Indonesia's mixed doubles hopefuls Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir were scheduled to play later against Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Yu Yan Vanessa of Singapore.
