he Depok District Court in West Java has sentenced Nigerian citizen Uzoma Elele Alfar, 33, to life imprisonment for smuggling 4 kilograms of methamphetamine and 301.1 grams of marijuana.
"The defendant is declared guilty and sentenced to life in prison," presiding judge Hariono said in his verdict on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
After discussing the verdict with his lawyer, Alfar accepted the sentence. "We accept the sentence," he said through his interpreter.
The sentence was much lighter than the prosecutors' demand for the death penalty for Alfar.
One of the prosecutors, Edy Azis, said he would discuss with his superiors before deciding whether to appeal against the sentence.
"We have seven days to think about accepting or appealing against it," he added.
Alfar was caught by immigration and BNN (National Anti-Narcotics Agency) officers in Depok on Sept. 16, 2014.
The officers confiscated the crystal methamphetamine and marijuana hidden in a CCTV unit and a baby carriage. (hhr) (++++)
